Scientist Volunteers
Thanks so much for volunteering to share your experience with local students. The purpose of the program is to inspire students to like science and see what real scientists do. The lectures are open to public, private, charter and home school groups. You can offer as many lectures as you like..This is a new program and will have some bugs so please let me know what they are.
Presentation Information:
Feedback: Since this is a new program, feedback will help me make improvements and analyze its success. There will be two kinds of feedback. You should send me confidential feedback about your experience and, if you'd like, feedback to the teacher. Likewise, the teacher will have the opportunity to send me confidential feedback and feedback to you. I'm sure we'll all learn a lot as this program develops.
Presentation Information:
- Email - Your email address will be available to anyone with the password. This includes teachers and scientists. Teachers will be able to contact you from this website.
- Lecture name - It can be descriptive or clever.
- Subject - A general description - Just a few words, for example, "Electronics" or "Geology of Durango"
- Science Category - Please designate Physical Science, Life Science or Earth Systems Science. This will help with classifying your lecture.
- Grades - The program is open to elementary through college classrooms. Your audience will be whatever grades you specify. You can access the 9-R Science Dashboards for each grade to see what's expected in the science curriculum. Click here. This should help you design your presentation. Please keep in mind, the younger the audience, the shorter the attention span. All students will prefer interactive presentations, especially the younger ones.
- When - You'll be able to specify when you're available; time of year, days of the week, and time of day.
- Where - The service area is the same as San Juan BOCES, so you can specify which areas you are willing to travel to. The BOCES area is Silverton and south, and Pagosa Springs and west.
- Synopsis - Please write a detailed paragraph about what you are doing and the time frame. For example, "The concept "a circuit is a circle" will be discussed for about 10 minutes. Then students will build circuits with batteries, LED's, switches, fans and resistors for 20 minutes. There are enough materials for the class to be divided into 8 groups."
